KINDLE IN CANADA AVAILABLE NOW!!!!

kindle canada

Got some very good news for you! Amazon now ships the Kindle book reader to Canada!

All you have to do is go to the Kindle page here and add it to your shopping cart. You can pay with your Canadian credit card and have it sent to your Canadian address.

Bear in mind that there is a small, limited amount of Kindles available right now and they are flying off the shelves. If you are thinking of buying one better hurry up before they run out of stock or you will have to wait several weeks for them to be available again

Some important things to consider:

  • You can only buy a Kindle at Amazon. They are not available at any store
  • You can only buy your Kindle at the international Amazon store. This means that if you try to buy it at the Canadian Amazon website you will not find it there.  You will probably have to create a new account in order to buy from this international store (quick and painless process, takes a couple of minutes).
  • The Kindle is a delicate gadget and it does not include a cover. I strongly suggest you add a cover when placing your order. You will be presented with several options before checkout, and the Kindle leather cover is the most popular one.

Here is what Amazon says about shipping kindles to Canada:

Kindle Canada?

Because of copyright issues Kindles are currently available for US residents only. How do they know you are in the US? They require a US credit card account and a US billing address. This doesn’t seem fair for Amazons international customers and our neighbors in Canada.

But if you want to buy a Kindle in Canada, or another country there may be some work around. Also the Kindle is still a new device. It took the Sony reader 2 years before it was available in Canada. So I’m sure once the copyright and whispernet issues are sorted out. The kindle in Canada will be available.

After reading Amazons Kindle forums I’ve discovered. If you have a US billing and shipping address you can own a Kindle and purchase Kindle books anywhere in the world. A woman who lives in the South Pacific, said she purchased a Kindle while visiting the US. and had a friend order it with her credit card.

Then the friend de-registered it and she bought several books with another US credit card and put them on SD cards. Or you can just get a US credit card and use a friends US address and then you can download books onto your computer. Then transfer them onto the Kindle.

Another option some suggested was purchasing an Amazon gift card. Emailing it to yourself. Then putting the code number into your account. Then you could purchase the Kindle and download ebooks as long as your gift card balance was large enough.

If someone wants a Kindle in Canada badly enough they will find a way to get one. Although one of the nice things about the Kindle is the downloads on the fly. It’s unfortunate that they are not available in other countries yet. But hopefully that will change soon.

UPDATE!

I received an interesting comment from a nice Canadian visitor of this blog. She told me that she managed to buy a Kindle from her home in Canada… using a Canadian credit card!

So… how did she do it? Well, unfortunately you still need to have an address in the US to have the Kindle shipped to. Amazon will not send it to any place outside the USA. Just find someone who can receive it for you: a relative, a friend, a friend’s friend… you get the idea. As long as you have a place in the USA to have the Kindle sent to you are one step ahead.

First of all, on your computer’s keyboard hold down the ctrl and the D keys together to bookmark this page. . That way you can save it and visit it again it when you have found someone that can help you out.

Now what you need to do is call the bank which issued your credit card and ask them to set up an alternate address for it. Of course, this alternate address will be the one you are borrowing in the US. I do not know which credit cards can use an alternate address, if yours does please let us know.

Now that you have your alternate address setup, go to Amazon:

Click here to go to the Kindle 2 page

Click here to go to the Kindle DX page

Place your order, and type in your credit card number, but give your alternate address… and voila! You have used you Canadian credit card to buy a Kindle!

The comment section is open, please feel free to post your experience and let me and everyone else that reads this blog know if this worked for you! I’d love to hear some success stories :)

Well the gift card idea doesnt work as Ive tried that! You still have to have a US credit card on file with your one-click amazon account even though you are using a gift card! so any way you try it – you must have a US credit card with a US address.

  2. Jesse on March 18th, 2009 3:30 pm

Good to know. I’m sure they will come out with a Canadian version or a Canadian update soon. At least that is the rumor.

  3. lallyscrap on March 18th, 2009 5:52 pm

I sure hope so – Im wondering whether to send it back now! and getting really frustrated in the meantime. Can’t wait to get a Kindle in Canada

  4. Jesse on March 18th, 2009 6:43 pm

Wow, I’m sorry. I can see how frustrating that would be. The best thing about the Kindle is the instant downloads with the Whispernet service and the ability to download, the first chapters of books to preview them.

Therefore I would have to agree with you and think it would be in your best interest to return your non-functional Kindle now. And wait for the Canadian version.

The good news is that it will probably have gone down in price by then. Best of luck, and I really do appreciate your input.

So if you have a Kindle in Canada and try to download over the web, will you be stopped if you have a Canadian isp address? I note that I am unable to access much of YouTube content and nearly all of HULU when my isp is identified. Help

  6. Jesse on May 4th, 2009 9:45 am

I am not sure. But supposedly if you have a Kindle and are traveling abroad, you can still get Kindle books online, and upload them with the USB cord since Whispernet is not available. So I would assume your IP would not be blocked. That being said you would still need a US credit card and address to open your original Kindle account. Seems like a hassle. I would probably wait until they are actually available to Canadian residents.

I also just bought a Kindle 2 and so far I am disappointed. I have a Mac and I am trying to download books from Fictionbooks but can’t seem to sync my Mac and Kindle. Any ideas on how to do this?

  8. Jesse on May 19th, 2009 12:52 pm

Hello Mari. I’m not sure what Fictionbooks is and I don’t have a Mac, and I’m not sure if you are in Canada or not. But Apple does have some syncing software where you can sync your Kindle and a drive on your Mac.

Also feedbooks has a lot of helpful info on syncing books with a Kindle.

I am in Edmonton and I have a Kindle, which, in the business world would now qualify as a “stranded asset”.
I acquired it by asking a US relative to buy it for me. Now I have the “US Credit Card” problem which bars me from purchasing books.
I am reluctant to ask my US relative to go on the hook for my book purchases, so I have a useless Kindle.

  10. Kevin on May 26th, 2009 8:38 am

Terry, I’m in Edmonton as well. Would you be interested in selling yours?

    If so email me at:

    klslywka111@live.com

    Thanks,
    Kevin

  11. Jesse on May 26th, 2009 9:27 am

Thanks Kevin, maybe that will be a solution for Terry.

Also Kevin, if you want to share your work around with us that would be great.

I still think it’s as simple, or as complex, as having a friend in the US, give you their address and then you either use their credit card, or use their address to get a US credit card. Then have the Kindle shipped to the US address, and use the US card to purchase books, and upload them using USB.

  12. Kevin on May 26th, 2009 7:54 pm

    Jesse,

Yes I have relative in the US who will buy the gift card, and provide an Amazon account. I pay the bills.

I plan the USB route for books. Or if necessary, my relative can buy and download there and email them.

oups and yes if you buy a gift card on the Amazone site you can buy a Kindle as well as accessories without any problem. So yes, a Kindle Canada is possible.

  14. sue bidoux on June 2nd, 2009 2:14 pm

I bought a Kindle 2 on ebay usa and received it in Quebec Canada but the only thing you can do with it in Canada is download free right free classic french or english books (about 170 in each language) on manybooks.net or surf the web for free kindle e- books the format used is azw for downloads it does not support pdf formats, to buy new books on amazone you either need a us credit card with us adress or some download the amazone e books on their Apple phone’s but since i do not have either I just returned it. Very disapointing to not be able to do more with it here in Canada, for a short instant wish I was American… Guess will have to wait a year or so or look at the Sony Version although not the same storage value…

  15. Mark Cherry on June 7th, 2009 7:59 pm

I had a friend in the US purchase a Kindle2 for me. I then opened up an “amazon.com” account and purchased gift cards with my Canadian credit card. Since these gift cards were purchased on the “amazon.com” site (which is the US site) I am able to apply them to my Kindle account. Though my Kindle acct. is associated with my friend’s US credit card and US address, any Kindle book purchases are first deducted from the gift cards. I then just download my books to my computer and load them on my Kindle.

  16. Jesse on June 7th, 2009 8:07 pm

Thank-you Mark. Hopefully that will clear up some of the confusion. I appreciate you sharing.

ADB: The whispernet uses cell phone networks to get on the internet. The cell networks won’t allow you to connect without a valid account. You won’t even get an IP address if you’re outside the supported areas.

Basically Amazon sets up an agreement to piggy-back on a network’s towers for Kindle users to download unlimited content. It’s included in the purchase price of the Kindle, which is seven ways of awesome.

    Dear Kindle Experts,

I am a young reader and I have saved my money for a Kindle 2. Unfortunatly, I live in Canada. My family goes to the states often, so could I find one in stores? Also, we can’t download eBooks without a US credit card or address? That kind of sucks. Does anyone know of another eBook Reader that is in Canada? One that you can download LOTS of books on. I was exited when I found out that Amazon had one so I knew that they would have a lot of my favorite books. So I am hesititant to buy a Sony or something because it might not have the books I want. And also, on a Sony reader, can you download eBooks from the device? Or just from a computer. If you can answer these questions, please e-mail me at spynet1_2@hotmail.com. I have just started researching eBook readers and would appreciate the Info.! Thank you! :)

It is unlikely Canada is going to get one any time soon. I am confident that India will get it before Canada does. Deals with wireless companies are necessary for amazon to sell in any country. The wireless companies are too greedy and Canada does not have any regulators with spine. Rogers gobbled up all gsm competitors. Telus would have gobbled up Bell, but Harper government grew some spine then. They did let Bell buy up Virgin Mobile.

What if I wouldn’t care about getting books from the Amazon store? There are tons of free books out there, many in public domain, some more under Creative Commons, and one could find more books if they know where to look for. Could I buy the Kindle off eBay, and upload books to it using the USB connection? Would that work?

  21. Jesse on September 1st, 2009 8:03 pm

I wouldn’t recommend getting a Kindle at Ebay or any other place except for Amazon’s website. Who knows what you will receive, or if your warranty will still be valid in case of any problems.
As for downloading books via the USB, yes, you can do it. You can even buy books at Amazon and download them also, all you need is a gift card. Take a look at this article: How to buy Kindle ebooks using an Amazon gift card

I have a kindle and a Iphone with kindle in Canada.

First call your Canadian Credit Card provider, and add an alternate address, along with your main billing address. I use the American address of relatives of mine in Florida.

Then go to Amazon, and add that credit card, but enter the alternate American address.

Place your order, and voila! Instant kindle books.

My Canadian Amex card works just fine, and I can download books all day long.It

    Dear Kindle Fans:

buying books on Amazon.com… Jesse is 100% right. You don’t need US credit card, you also don’t need to add alternative address to you main billing address. All you need to do is to buy Amazon.com gift card (You can do that with your Canadian credit card). Now create new Amazon.com account without filling any credit card info, register your Kindle, find a book you want to buy and click “Buy now with 1-click”. Now put the Amazon.com gift card number and US address (if you don’t have any friends or family in US, use business address or made it up). You don’t need to provide credit card number, just leave this field blank. That’s it. Go to “Manage your Kindle” and download all your books to your puter. That’s it! It works. Hope it helps! :3

Interesting. I have neither a US credit nor a US address. However, I have a European one, and see one can buy Kindle2 on amazon.de. Does anyone know whether I can download books in Canada or anyone else for that matter, if I buy kindle2 in Germany?

  26. Jesse on September 22nd, 2009 1:17 am

Have you checked out the thread about buying books with an Amazon gift card?

  27. MUFC_Fan on September 23rd, 2009 10:14 pm

Thanks to Kindle DX fan, you are spot on! I merely added a US address to my existing Amazon account.

After registering the serial number of my device I was able to go to “Your Orders” on the “Manage Your Kindle” screen and download to my Mac. Plug the Kindle in with the USB cable and drop the files in the “Documents” folder. Done!

As mentioned previously, there is a TON of public domain stuff out there – just make sure that you download the supported file format and you’re good to go. [ie: freekindlebooks.org]

.pdf’s still aren’t supported, but I’ve already found enough stuff to keep me reading for months.

    Have fun everyone!

Karen: I’m not sure if you can buy Kindle 2 on Amazon.de. To tell the truth I couldn’t find it. But I believe you can find a company that imports Kindles to Germany, just google it. Now about books again. It doesn’t matter if you live in Germany, Canada, India etc. You still can buy Kindle books. Again all you need (I assume you don’t have US credit card) is Amazon.com gift card (you can purchase it with you German cc) and US billing address that you have to add to your Amazon.com account. I’m not suggesting adding US address like “Beverly Hills 90210″ (it’s for educational purposes only), I’m just telling you, there’s such a possibility and it works.

MUFC_Fan: You are right, we can get tons of free goodies outside Amazon.com :3 Pdfs do work on Kindle DX. I upload them on my Kindle DX with USB cable.

  29. Riptide on October 10th, 2009 10:16 pm

Hello, I have an account registered with amazon.com, and there is a gift card applied to my account. Yet when I try to purchase a ebook (or download one that’s $0.00), I get an error screen.

Amazon will ask me to select my Kindle, then choose a billing address. I’ve registered my amazon acc to a US address that I found on the net in the US. When I select that address, and hit continue, I get the below error. This has been happening for the last 2 days… when I spoke to Amazon about it, they were unable to assist me…. any idea’s?

    riptide1 at tiomat.com. Thanks!

    We’re sorry!
An error occurred when we tried to process your request. Rest assured, we’re working to resolve the problem as soon as possible. If you were trying to make a purchase, please check Your Account to confirm that the order was placed. We apologize for the inconvenience.

continue shopping on the Amazon.com home page.

  30. Jesse on October 10th, 2009 10:49 pm

Well, I don’t quite understand why this is happening. If you have a gift card balance on your amazon kindle account, they will automatically deduct your purchase from that balance before they charge your credit card. The only thing this does not work for are newspaper or magazine subscriptions.
Are you sure you have enough balance on your gift card? Is this the first time you are trying to do this or have you made previous purchases successfully? Is this a recent error or has it always happened when you try to buy something?

  31. Canadian Kindler on October 15th, 2009 2:41 pm

    Hi all,

So from what I have read here is that if you are living in Canada and have purchased a kindle 2, you can purchase ebooks via amazon gift cards? My other question is if you didn’t want to use their wireless service and just wanted to transfer PDF or other types of files using USB, is that still a good solution? Some people have mentioned on here that PDF is not supported but from the specs on Amazon, it says it can read PDF files. Can someone confirm this? Thanks.

  32. Jesse on October 15th, 2009 10:44 pm

Yup, you can read about it here
Buy Kindle books with gift cards

And yes, you can transfer the books to your Kindle via USB but if you want to see PDF docs you need a Kindle DX, it is meant for that.
