What is a Kindle?

books About three years ago Amazon set out to design a new class of device. A convenient, portable reading device with the ability to wirelessly download books, blogs, magazines, and newspapers. I think they succeeded with the wireless reading device they called “Kindle” (not Kindal or Kindel,  as some people think it is called).

The Kindle uses electronic paper, a display technology which has the look of real paper with no glare or back light needed. It also has an ergonomic design, feels good in the hands, has ambidextrous buttons and only weighs 10.3 ounces. Even though it stores hundreds of titles and you can also use an optional SD memory card for even more storage.

Another nice thing about Kindle is that there is no wireless set up and no wireless charge. Kindle uses the EVDO network and you can download books and magazines on the fly. The ebooks not only cost less than a hard copy. But  you can download and read the first chapters for free to make sure you really want the book. Just browsing the store will kill a lot of time on a long flight. Wireless reading was never so easy!

The Kindle ebboks reader also has a keyboard you can use for Bookmarks and annotations, a built in dictionary, built in search, and wireless access to Wikipedia. Besides the comfortable buttons and ergonomic feel the Kindle also has adjustable text size and a long battery life.  If your not using wireless, you can read for a week before recharging.

Included with the Kindle Ebook Reader are a leather book cover, power adapter and a USB 2.0 cable. The Amazon store has a large selection of reading options.  New releases usually cost 9.99$ and magazines, newspapers, and blogs are also downloadable.

So far there are 3 models of this ereader: the Kindle 1, or first generation, the Kindle 2 and the most recent Kindle DX , which quickly sold out after a short time of being released.
