KINDLE IN CANADA AVAILABLE NOW!!!!

kindle canada

Got some very good news for you! Amazon now ships the Kindle book reader to Canada!

All you have to do is go to the Kindle page here and add it to your shopping cart. You can pay with your Canadian credit card and have it sent to your Canadian address.

Bear in mind that there is a small, limited amount of Kindles available right now and they are flying off the shelves. If you are thinking of buying one better hurry up before they run out of stock or you will have to wait several weeks for them to be available again

Some important things to consider:

  • You can only buy a Kindle at Amazon. They are not available at any store
  • You can only buy your Kindle at the international Amazon store. This means that if you try to buy it at the Canadian Amazon website you will not find it there.  You will probably have to create a new account in order to buy from this international store (quick and painless process, takes a couple of minutes).
  • The Kindle is a delicate gadget and it does not include a cover. I strongly suggest you add a cover when placing your order. You will be presented with several options before checkout, and the Kindle leather cover is the most popular one.

Here is what Amazon says about shipping kindles to Canada:

Kindle Canada?

Because of copyright issues Kindles are currently available for US residents only. How do they know you are in the US? They require a US credit card account and a US billing address. This doesn’t seem fair for Amazons international customers and our neighbors in Canada.

But if you want to buy a Kindle in Canada, or another country there may be some work around. Also the Kindle is still a new device. It took the Sony reader 2 years before it was available in Canada. So I’m sure once the copyright and whispernet issues are sorted out. The kindle in Canada will be available.

After reading Amazons Kindle forums I’ve discovered. If you have a US billing and shipping address you can own a Kindle and purchase Kindle books anywhere in the world. A woman who lives in the South Pacific, said she purchased a Kindle while visiting the US. and had a friend order it with her credit card.

Then the friend de-registered it and she bought several books with another US credit card and put them on SD cards. Or you can just get a US credit card and use a friends US address and then you can download books onto your computer. Then transfer them onto the Kindle.

Another option some suggested was purchasing an Amazon gift card. Emailing it to yourself. Then putting the code number into your account. Then you could purchase the Kindle and download ebooks as long as your gift card balance was large enough.

If someone wants a Kindle in Canada badly enough they will find a way to get one. Although one of the nice things about the Kindle is the downloads on the fly. It’s unfortunate that they are not available in other countries yet. But hopefully that will change soon.

UPDATE!

I received an interesting comment from a nice Canadian visitor of this blog. She told me that she managed to buy a Kindle from her home in Canada… using a Canadian credit card!

So… how did she do it? Well, unfortunately you still need to have an address in the US to have the Kindle shipped to. Amazon will not send it to any place outside the USA. Just find someone who can receive it for you: a relative, a friend, a friend’s friend… you get the idea. As long as you have a place in the USA to have the Kindle sent to you are one step ahead.

First of all, on your computer’s keyboard hold down the ctrl and the D keys together to bookmark this page. . That way you can save it and visit it again it when you have found someone that can help you out.

Now what you need to do is call the bank which issued your credit card and ask them to set up an alternate address for it. Of course, this alternate address will be the one you are borrowing in the US. I do not know which credit cards can use an alternate address, if yours does please let us know.

Now that you have your alternate address setup, go to Amazon:

Click here to go to the Kindle 2 page

Click here to go to the Kindle DX page

Place your order, and type in your credit card number, but give your alternate address… and voila! You have used you Canadian credit card to buy a Kindle!

The comment section is open, please feel free to post your experience and let me and everyone else that reads this blog know if this worked for you! I’d love to hear some success stories :)
